Visiting the pottery centre in La Atalaya near Santa Brigida on Gran Canaria has been the great highlight of our stay here. The Centre’s twofold mission is as bold as it is admirable: firstly, to revive, preserve and keep alive the island’s ancient craft of pottery making, using skills that had been refined long before Spain subdued its native population: secondly to bring knowledge about that craft and the culture that it grew from to present and future generations – and to the world at large. The skills and the physical products of those skills – the pots themselves – arouse immense admiration and respect for those ancient societies. And admiration and respect is equally due to the Centre’s enthusiasts for their determination to acquire the skills – and disseminate the knowledge that they gain in the process. They are performing a great service to their own society and to all those from other countries who are lucky enough to find their way here.

Thank you for a stimulating and professional presentation of your collection and your work. We will treasure the items we bought to take with us – not just as simple souvenirs, but as living evidence of an ancient culture.
